Dear friends,
The Communist Party of BC is supported solely and only by its members and supporters – working people like you.
If you are following the Communist Party of BC’s participation in the Oct. 24 provincial election, you know the basic story. Despite the extremely short nomination period (11 days from Premier Horgan’s surprise announcement to the final deadline to submit the paperwork and deposits!), we managed to nominate five candidates around the Lower Mainland and Victoria regions. These are the only socialist candidates on the ballot in British Columbia. We are extremely proud to present a truly radical, working class platform to voters in these ridings.
In the Premier’s own riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca, Tyson Riel Strandlund is on the ballot, fighting for policies that put the interests of working people and the environment first, not corporations. Walt Parsons is challenging NDP Education Minister Rob Fleming in Victoria-Swan Lake, and Florian Castle, a 19-year-old University of Victoria student, in the Oak Bay-Gordon Head riding, held for the past three years by Andrew Weaver. In Surrey-Whalley, Ryan Abbott is bringing the CP-BC message to voters, and Kimball Cariou is our candidate in Vancouver Hastings.
This is not a big, flashy campaign with expensive media buys and billboards. We are reaching out to the public on social media, talking to voters on the street, and answering questions circulated by progressive organizations. Lawn signs from previous elections have been re-purposed to save money and reduce the environmental footprint of our campaign. Our volunteers are staying close to home, not travelling around the province.
But we will have expenses totalling a few thousand dollars for the entire campaign. Barely even a “shoestring”, but that’s not new for us. The Communist Party of BC is supported solely and only by its members and supporters – working people like you, not corporate donors.
Your contributions will help us cover the minimal costs to print leaflets and posters, to pay for transit for volunteers, and to rent equipment to make an election video featuring our candidates.
We can’t reach out to voters in this campaign, or carry on our political work between elections, without the generous financial and political support of friends and members. If you think it’s important to win the people of British Columbia for socialist alternatives during this time of deep crisis for the capitalist system, please call us to volunteer, or support our work with a donation.
