Kimball Cariou

Vancouver - Hastings

Kimball Cariou is the Communist Party of BC candidate in Vancouver-Hastings, the riding where he has lived for the last 15 years. Born in Saskatoon, Kimball's working class prairie family background includes both Metis and European settler ancestry. He became active in radical politics as a teenager living in central Alberta, and joined the Communist Party in 1972 as a student at the University of Alberta. Kimball later worked as a labourer and city parks employee in Edmonton, before becoming the Saskatchewan leader of the Communist Party during the 1980s. In 1993, he and his family moved to Vancouver, where he works as the editor of People’s Voice newspaper, which reports on working class and socialist struggles in Canada and around the world. Kimball is a long-time supporter of movements for trade union and indigenous rights, and has been engaged in many struggles against racism, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny. He is active in his housing cooperative, and is a strong advocate for demands to stop displacement and launch a massive program to build low-income housing. He wants to reverse the BC Liberal government's multi-billion dollar tax breaks for the wealthy and the corporations, and calls to double social assistance and disability rates in our province. "It's not enough to criticize the injustices of capitalism," says Kimball. "We have to get rid of this private profit system, and build a socialist future. Voting Communist is one important step in a wider, long-range struggle to end exploitation, oppression and war, and to create a sustainable and just society."
