SUMMARY:Left Film Night: Rosa Luxemburg
DESCRIPTION:Left Film Night: Rosa Luxemburg\nDirected by Margarethe von Trotta\, 1986\, 122 minutes\, in German and Polish with English subtitles \nSunday\, March 31\, 2019\, 7 pm\nCentre for Socialist Education\, on Unceded Coast Salish Territories\n706 Clark Drive\, Vancouver (corner of Clark & E. Georgia) \nThis event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied territories of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. In acknowledging this\, we must be in solidarity with the struggles of the peoples of the territory in which we occupy. \nCelebrate Women’s History Month with this screening of “Rosa Luxemburg\,” which received the 1986 German Film Award for Best Feature Film (Bester Spielfilm). This is a first-rate introduction to a liberated revolutionary woman who struggled for working class unity\, against patriarchy\, nationalism and other divisive ideologies. Barbara Sukowa won the Cannes Festival’s Best Actress Award for her performance as “Red Rosa\,” the Polish-born Marxist who campaigned relentlessly for socialism and peace. Repeatedly imprisoned in Germany and Poland\, Luxemburg was among the European socialists who condemned the imperialist First World War\, and then helped launch the Spartacist uprising in Germany. She and fellow German communist leader Karl Liebknecht were assassinated on January 15\, 1919\, for their bold efforts to win the working class for a socialist revolution. \nLeft Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education\, Young Communist League\, and the Vancouver East Club of the Communist Party of Canada. \n*************\nNo admission charge\, but donations towards our costs are welcome. Coffee and refreshments available. Call 604-255-2041 or email <pvoice@telus.net> for further information.

SUMMARY:Left film night: Finding Oscar
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Socialist Education\, Young Communist League\, and the Vancouver East Club of the Communist Party of Canada presents left film night: Finding Oscar. \nSunday\, January 27\, 2019\, 7 pm\nCentre for Socialist Education\, on Unceded Coast Salish Territories\n706 Clark Drive\, Vancouver (corner of Clark & E. Georgia) \nWritten and directed by Ryan Suffern\, USA\, 2017\, 94 minutes \nLooking back to Guatemala’s 1982 Dos Erres massacre\, director Ryan Suffern focuses not on the nearly 250 villagers who were murdered by commandos working for the government\, but on a child who is said to have survived and been raised by one of the soldiers who carried out the atrocity. This was one of many bloody events in Guatemala’s decades-long US-funded war against Indigenous peasant communities\, the effects of which are still being felt today. A mix of archival footage and interviews with surviving family members of the victims guide the way toward Oscar. The search is not easy\, but Suffern strikes a respectful\, not entirely hopeless tone\, allowing those affected by the civil war to speak about their experiences. Their words are often more powerful than the filmmaking\, but Suffern wisely allows them to do most of the talking. \nThis event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied territories of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. In acknowledging this\, we must be in solidarity with the struggles of the peoples of the territory in which we occupy. \n*************\nNo admission charge\, but donations towards our costs are welcome. SUMMARY:LEFT FILM NIGHT - "The Coming War on China"
DESCRIPTION:(Directed by John Pilger\, 2016\, 113 minutes)The Coming War on China is John Pilger’s 60th film for ITV. This documentary details how the world’s greatest military power\, the United States\, is engaged in a huge armed build-up against China\, the world’s second economic power. The “pivot to Asia” began under Barack Obama\, transferring almost two-thirds of US naval forces to the Asia-Pacific region. Obama’s strategy to surround China with troops\, aircraft carriers\, bombers and missiles has been continued by Donald Trump\, who takes anti-China threats to an even higher level. The danger of nuclear war is no longer unthinkable. Filmed on five possible front lines across Asia and the Pacific over the course of two years\, the story is told in chapters that connect a forgotten past to the rapacious actions of great power militarism today\, and to a resistance of which little is known in the West. \nLeft Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education\, Young Communist League\, and the Vancouver East Club of the Communist Party of Canada.

SUMMARY:Fight the Pipeline Fundraiser Night
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening of music\, drinks\, a raffle\, silent auction\, and speakers\, including hereditary Chief Eric Pelkey of the Tsawout First Nation at the Victoria Event Center on Monday\, August 6th! Live music will be provided by Singer/Songwriter/Activist Peach Guevara. Together we will be raising money to help pay for the legal fees of protesters charged while resisting the advances of the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Proceeds from this event will also help the Tsawout First Nations repair a traditional canoe to be used asserting Indigenous title and rights on the Salish Sea. \nAdmission is $10. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \n*********************************************************************** \nThe federal Liberal government’s $4.5 billion purchase of the TransMountain pipeline expansion project is a bonanza for Kinder Morgan shareholders\, but a disaster for Indigenous peoples\, the environment\, and communities along the pipeline route. We call on Parliament to reject this dangerous sellout\, and instead to move away from reliance on extraction and export of raw materials\, towards energy and resource policies that protect the interests of people and the environment\, and respect Canada’s commitments to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Paris Agreement. \nPM Trudeau set the stage for Kinder Morgan’s blackmail tactics\, when he immediately surrendered to the US-based corporation’s demand for guarantees of compensation in the face of massive opposition from First Nations and environmental groups\, and the BC government’s legal challenge. \nBut as the Protect the Inlet coalition and other opponents made clear after the deal was announced on May 28\, the answer to the pipeline expansion is still “NO”. This project poses a terrible danger to the fragile eco-systems of the west coast in the event of any significant leak or tanker spill. It was approved after a review process rigged to meet the demands of Kinder Morgan\, and it lacks the consent of impacted communities along its route. Hundreds of people have already been arrested for opposing the pipeline and defending the water\, land\, and climate\, and tens of thousands more have declared their intention to mount even stronger resistance. \n*********************************************************************** \nAccessibility:\n* The Victoria Event Centre currently does not have an operational elevator\, and there is one long flight of stairs at the venue entrance. If you would like to attend the event but require assistance with accessing the space\, please contact us at events@victoriaeventcentre.ca and VEC staff do their best to accommodate.\n* More detailed venue accessibility info is available at https://victoriaeventcentre.ca/attendees/accessibility/\n* Washrooms are for all genders. \n*********************************************************************** \nWe acknowledge with respect the Lkwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory this event is being held\, and the Songhees\, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

SUMMARY:Left flim night - The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical
DESCRIPTION:Left flim night – The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical\n(2018\, 90 minutes\, directed by Teresa Alfeld) \nSunday\, June 24\, 7 pm\nCentre for Socialist Education\, on Unceded Coast Salish Territories\n706 Clark Drive\, Vancouver (corner of Clark & E. Georgia) \nThe year is 1986. Expo 86 has just ended and affordability is at the top of everyone’s mind. Harry Rankin\, World War II veteran\, criminal lawyer\, city councillor\, and outspoken socialist decides to run for mayor against NPA councillor Gordon Campbell. More than twenty years later\, director Teresa Alfeld unearthed reels of 16mm footage of Harry’s campaign trail to bring us The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical. Combining rich archival footage with present-day interviews\, Alfeld crafts a wildly entertaining primer on Vancouver civic politics\, with a cast of local politicians and activists including Mike Harcourt\, Libby Davies\, Bruce Yorke\, Jean Swanson\, Stewart and Joan Phillip and Gordon Campbell. Rankin was an ally of the powerless\, taking on cases and causes that no one else would touch\, including the 1972 inquest into the death of Fred Quilt\, an Indigenous man who died in police custody in Tsilhqot’in territory. The issues that Rankin fought for in that 1986 election — affordable housing\, equality\, and accessibility — remain crucial in the city today. \nLeft Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education\, Young Communist League\, and the Vancouver East Club of the Communist Party of Canada. For this occasion only\, admission is $5 or pay what you can. Ph. 604-255-2041 for more information. \n\n

SUMMARY:"The Young Karl Marx"
DESCRIPTION:LEFT FILM NIGHT CELEBRATES THE 200TH BIRTHDAY OF KARL MARX (May 5\, 1818) \nFresh off the success of his James Baldwin documentary\, I Am Not Your Negro\, Haitian-born director Raoul Peck tackles the early days of the friendship between Karl Marx (August Diehl) and Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske) as they struggle to establish the Communist Party and complete the Communist Manifesto. In his mid-20s\, Marx was already a veteran of the class wars when he met—and initially disliked—the dapper\, 22-year-old Engels\, son of a rich textile manufacturer. From the smoky cafés of Paris\, to the socialist enclaves of London\, where Marx lived in exile\, these two revolutionaries and their families\, friends and comrades begin the task of reshaping the world. Of particular interest is the critical role of women (notably Vicky Krieps as Jenny von Westphalen)  in creating the communist theory and building the movements which carried it into the working class. In the Guardian\, Peter Bradshaw writes\, “[A] sinewy and intensely focused\, uncompromisingly cerebral period drama… This is a film which sticks to a credo that people arguing about theories and concepts—while also periodically angrily rejecting the notion of mere abstraction—is highly interesting. And Peck and Bonitzer pull off the considerable trick of making it interesting\, aided by very good performances from Diehl and Konarske… [This] fervent film… shouldn’t work\, but it does\, due to the intelligence of the acting and the stamina and concentration of the writing and directing.” \n(2017\, 118 minutes\, directed by Raoul Peck\, France/Belgium/Germany)

SUMMARY:Solidarity Vigil with Palestine - Denounce Land Day Massacre
DESCRIPTION:On March 30\, 2018\, Israeli military forces callously killed 17 unarmed Palestinian protestors and injured hundreds more in Gaza. The protestors were part of the Great Return March as well as marking Land Day.\nCanadian government officials have not uttered any word to condemn this massacre\, let alone apply any sanctions. Canadian media\, including the CBC\, have tried to obscure Israel’s crimes by talking about “clashes” and “confrontations” and “rioting”. However\, the Israeli military themselves admitted in a tweet that they later deleted: “everything was accurate and measured\, and we know where every bullet landed.” Israeli media has shown multiple pictures of Israeli snipers lined up on earth embankments\, ready to fire at civilians. Which they did\, shooting people kneeling in prayer and shooting others in the back as they were moving away from the border.\nWe demand that Israel be held accountable for these continued crimes against the Palestinian people; it is only because of the lack of action and complicity from Western countries that Israel acts with such impunity!\nList of endorsing organizations to be posted soon.\nWe acknowledge that this event takes places on the unceded territories of our indigenous brothers and sisters.

SUMMARY:Hey Trudeau! Kinder Morgan Has Got to Go!
DESCRIPTION:After nearly 200 arrests on Burnaby Mountain of people taking bold action to stop Kinder Morgan\, this Thursday\, Justin Trudeau is scheduled to be in Vancouver raising money for his own re-election campaign. That’s right Trudeau is fundraising at the same time he’s trying to shove an unwanted pipeline through Vancouver\, Burnaby and all of BC. \nNot on our watch. On Thursday April 5th\, let’s show the Prime Minister that he is not welcome on unceded Coast Salish territories — not while he is ramming a reckless tar sands pipeline through without Indigenous consent. \n**Here’s the plan**\n5:30 – Gather at the Vancouver Art Gallery\n5:45 – March to the fundraiser at the Sheraton Wall Centre 1088 Burrard St.\n6:00 – 7:30 Arrive at the fundraiser as donors and attendees arrive to make noise and make sure Trudeau knows how much supporting KM will cost him. \n***In order order to make this as loud as possible\, we need everyone to bring two items from home – a pot or pan and a wooden spoon. It’s a tactic that Quebec students and community members used in 2012 to make a whole lot of noise\, and we think that Trudeau needs his ears to ring with our opposition\, so please\, bring out a pot or pan and a wooden spoon. *** \nWe don’t have the money to get into Trudeau’s event\, but we do have people power\, and we can show that no amount of dollars is going to help this Prime Minister come election day if he continues to ignore our climate commitments\, disrespect Indigenous rights and put this coast in peril. \nWe’ll march together to Trudeau’s fundraiser\, where the Prime Minister hopes to fill his re-election coffers. With enough people outside\, he’ll have to spend the whole night explaining to these supporters why he’s willing to risk a catastrophic oil spill in their backyards.\n\nKid Friendly

SUMMARY:International Day Against Racism March
DESCRIPTION:The annual International Day Against Racism March\, marking the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa\, will be held in Vancouver starting at Thornton Park (Main Street Skytrain Station). Then we will march through Chinatown. This is where Indigenous\, Black\, Chinese\, Japanese and South Asian people lived historically. \nWe acknowledge that this event is being organized on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. \nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization and genocide against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures\, and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nEndorsed by: Canadian Anti-racism Education and Research Society (CARES)\, UBC Social Justice Centre\, Radical Desis\, Latinos In Action\, Salaam Canada\, Siraat\, LGBTIQ2S+ Health Equity Collaborative\, Young Community League\, International Socialist.
